Being able to rely on your air conditioning system to keep your home cool and comfortable throughout the hottest time of the year is important. One must be diligent, though, as there is no such thing as a 100% problem-free air conditioning system. If you have any concerns about your air conditioner in Suffolk, VA, you should contact a member of our staff right away.
One common issue that we see with air conditioning systems is a refrigerant leak. It’s important to remember that your AC doesn’t consume refrigerant like a fuel. The fluid is recycled over and over. If you notice any signs of low refrigerant levels, you may have a leak on your hands.
Is There Ice on Your System?
You may see ice on your air conditioner and assume that it is just doing an overly effective job of cooling. But your AC is not a freezer, and it should never have ice appear on its refrigerant lines, outdoor unit, or evaporator coils (unless we’re in the dead of winter, and everything is covered with ice!). Refrigerant is responsible for drawing heat out of the air that your system cools. If there is not enough refrigerant in the system, the coil or lines can become too cold, and condensation on the coil can form frost.
Is Your System Blowing Out Warm Air?
Of course, if your refrigerant level is low and insufficient heat is being drawn out of the air, you cannot expect comfortably cool air to blow from the vents. Perhaps the most obvious indicator that you have refrigerant leaks is warm air blowing from the vents. If you aren’t able to cool your home as well as usual, low refrigerant may be to blame.
Is Your System Hissing?
You should also listen for indications of refrigerant leaks. You may actually be able to hear a hissing sound if refrigerant is escaping from your system through a small leak. You could even see refrigerant bubbling out, which is certainly something that we’ll check for when servicing your system.
