Should I Use a Gas or an Electric Furnace?

The furnace is probably the single most popular heating system in the country. This shouldn’t baffle anyone who has used a furnace to heat their home, of course. The furnace is capable of effectively heating a home in a very prompt manner, after all, assuming that it is sized and installed properly.

Even if you are sure that you want to heat your home with a furnace, there is still the question of how that furnace is going to actually generate heat. The two most common types of furnaces are gas and electric models. Here are a few points of consideration.

Gas vs. Electric Furnaces: Pros and Cons

Generally speaking, the gas furnace is the preferred of the two systems. Natural gas is readily available in most places, it is relatively clean-burning for a fossil fuel, and it is piped directly into the house. Unlike oil or propane, this means that natural gas does not have to be stored on-site.

Now, as we said, natural gas is readily available in most areas. It is not available everywhere, though, whereas electricity pretty much is. If you don’t have access to natural gas, or if you just don’t want to have the piping installed or you have reservations about the idea of piping natural gas into your home, an electric furnace is a great alternative to consider.

Both systems are more than capable of handling a home’s heating demand, again assuming that the system in question is properly sized. The major benefit of using natural gas over electricity comes down to the price point. Electric furnaces are actually incredibly efficient, as they don’t lose thermal energy to flue gasses. However, the cost of electricity can still lead to these systems costing more to operate than the natural gas-fueled counterparts.
