Schedule a Blower Door Test to Ensure Code Compliance

An energy audit is a great and necessary way in which to determine the air tightness of a home. While some natural ventilation in a home is beneficial, too much of that natural ventilation is a big problem. That is why scheduling a blower door test in Chesapeake, VA is such a good idea.

In fact, if you are having a new home constructed, a blower door test is going to be mandatory. Why? Because new home construction projects must meet certain air leakage criteria in order to be code compliant. Scheduling your blower door test with our team will ensure accurate results, and you can count on us to address any issues that we may come across.

New homes permitted in Maryland after July 1, 2015 must meet the 2015 IECC (International Energy Conservation Code) standards. In order to pass the code, specific air infiltration and duct leakage requirements must be satisfied. A blower door test is an important part of this evaluation.

In 1984, Colin Genge, the CEO of Retrotec, a manufacturer of blower door testing and other equipment, wrote the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) Enclosure Integrity Procedure. He has been the driving force behind changes made to this procedure in the following years. When companies and manufacturers have questions about peak pressure or enclosure hold times, Mr. Genge is the person to turn to.

How Does It Work?

A blower door test, such as those completed with Retrotec Blower Door Systems, entails the temporary installation of a fan in the door of a residence. This fan is fitted into the door securely, to prevent air leaks. The house is then depressurized by the fan. As a result, the air pressure in the house is lower than the air outside, which leads outdoor air to infiltrate the home via air leaks.

Once these air leaks are detected, steps can be taken to resolve the problem. Not only will this ensure that new homes are up to code, but also that existing homes are as efficient as possible. Give us a call with any questions that you may have.
