It seems like it’s been a long time coming, but spring is going to be here very soon. Once spring really settles into place, it is only a matter of time before the heat of summer returns. Before we re-enter the cooling season or welcome summer’s arrival, we want to remind you of a few ways in which you can protect your energy efficiency during the summer months. Any number of oversights and user errors can result in an inefficient air conditioning performance.
Keep this information in mind over the coming weeks and months, and be sure to contact our building science professionals if you have any questions about ways in which to boost your home’s performance. With our help, you won’t have to worry about sacrificing comfort for efficiency, or vice versa. We can help you to get the most out of your home and your air conditioner in Norfolk, VA this summer.
Don’t Forget About Your Air Ducts
Do you use a forced air heating system in your home? Did you notice that your furnace or heat pump was having trouble heating up your home effectively? If so, you may have leaky ductwork, and that problem is not going to simply go away once you start running your air conditioner. Remember, your ductwork services both your AC and your heater, if you use forced air central systems.
We wrote about scheduling a blower door test a few months back to ensure code compliance. New homes must also have their ducts tested to ensure code compliance. If your home is a bit older, though, or if you notice the aforementioned uneven heating/cooling, you should have your ducts tested to ensure their proper operation this summer.
Don’t Overlook Maintenance
There is nothing that you can do for your air conditioner that will benefit it more than scheduling routine air conditioning maintenance. We’ll get into the ins and outs of what routine AC maintenance actually entails in the coming weeks as the cooling season draws nearer. For now, suffice to say that a properly maintained, well-tuned air conditioner is not only going to cool your home more effectively and reliably, but will cost less to do so than one that is not well cared for.
Don’t Choose Air Filters Randomly
We understand that you want to keep the air quality in your home high, especially as allergen levels soar while spring gets underway. However, going to the hardware store and purchasing an expensive, thick filter to put in your system isn’t the way to go about it. Using a more efficient filter is only going to be beneficial if your system is designed to handle it.
You may be able to use a more efficient filter than you are currently are. Alternatively, you may need to have a designated air filtration system or air purifier installed in your home. Whatever the case, our IAQ specialists are here to ensure that all of your equipment is working together in harmony.
