March 25th, 2019

We may be closing out the heating season now that April is nearly upon us, but that doesn’t mean that it is time to push your heater out of your mind entirely. Particularly not if that heater failed to live up to your high expectations this past heating season. It may be late in the game, but you don’t want to put any necessary furnace repairs in Chesapeake, VA, on the backburner.

A relatively common issue that some homeowners encounter with their furnaces is the blowing out of cool air. This air does not have to be as cold as the air outside to indicate that there is a problem. It just has to be cooler than the air that should be coming out of the furnace. If you’ve identified this problem in your home, then the obvious next question is—what gives? Today, we’ll explore some potential causes.

Malfunctioning Heaters Burn—Through Money!

February 11th, 2019

Essentially, your heater is a machine that allows you to convert dollars into heated air. “Burning money” is more than just an expression in this context.

While you may not like to think of it that way, it does help illustrate why efficiency is so important. The higher your efficiency, the less money you have to burn.

Lowered efficiency means you need to spend more money to get the same level of heating. One of the biggest drags on efficiency is a malfunctioning heater or HVAC system. Here’s why:

Why Do I Keep Tripping Circuit Breakers?

January 28th, 2019
breaker-box-wires

There are a lot of opinions that are arguable out there. If you’ve ever stumbled into the comments section on a popular website, this is probably obvious to you. That being said, there are certain opinions that no one can or would really argue against. The fact that electricity is an incredible resource in our homes, for instance. Unless you’re entirely off the grid, which relatively few people are, you depend upon the electric utility in your area for access to the electricity that you use.

Unfortunately, while your utility may be quite reliable, there are still plenty of ways in which you may run into trouble when using electricity in your house. Because electricity can be dangerous when it is not being used correctly, any such problems really do demand your immediate attention—and that of a professional electrician in Norfolk, VA. Today, we’ll look at the common problem of tripped circuits. Resetting a tripped breaker isn’t hard, but it’s not something you should be doing regularly.

What Causes Tripped Breakers?

Your breaker box is there in place of an old fashioned fuse box in order to make resetting circuits easier and more convenient. You should expect to have to reset circuit breakers occasionally. Any number of issues may lead to tripped breakers, including the following:

  • Circuit Overloads
  • Short Circuits
  • Ground Faults

A circuit overload occurs when you are trying to draw more current from a circuit than it is meant to carry. A lot of homeowners wind up doing this because they buy strip outlets and load them up with a lot of different electronics or appliances. If this is the case, cut back on your draw, relocate some items to different outlets, and see if that helps. Any major appliances should also be running on their own circuits.

A short circuit occurs when your hot wire touches another hot wire or a neutral wire in an outlet. That causes a surge in current flow, overloading the circuit. You may hear a pop or even see sparks if this happens. Faulty wiring, including wiring that was incorrectly completed, is a serious fire risk. Do not ignore such problems.

You may also be running into a ground fault, meaning that a hot wire is touching either a ground wire or the surface of a metal box. This is of particular concern in areas where moisture is present. Installing GFCI outlets in such areas is advisable.

Is DIY Drain Cleaning Effective?

December 3rd, 2018

drainThe answer to that question is simple: no. Do-it-yourself drain cleaning methods are never as effective as having a professional plumber perform a cleaning. Sure, there are a lot of online tips and tricks, we don’t recommended them—not if you want the job done right. Some things you can fix yourself, but others should be left to the pros.

Of course, some problems do not require a professional. You can certainly use a plunger to clear out minor clogs. However, when it comes to a true cleaning, plungers and household chemical cleaners simply won’t do. Certified plumbers carry equipment meant to clean your plumbing system better than anything you can buy in a store. In fact, many of the items used at home only get a fraction of the job done or, worse, cause even more damage! Keep reading to see our comparison between at-home-solutions and professional drain cleaning in Portsmouth, VA.

Why Is My Heater Short Cycling?

November 19th, 2018

chilly-manDo you think that “good enough” is good enough when it comes to the way in which your heater operates? If so, we’ll be seeing you for heating repair in Norfolk, VA, before long. Don’t you think it makes more sense to have “minor” issues with your heater resolved before they inevitably become major issues? Because even those problems that you think you can live with or ride out are going to hit a point where they either become intolerable or they start to affect your system in a more severe way.

A prime example of this is short cycling. When it first starts, it is easy to say well, I’ll deal with this for the time being. What homeowners fail to realize is that, while their systems are still technically running, they’re not running properly. That leads to a lot of damages that could have been easily avoided if more prompt action were taken. So read on, and be sure to reach out if you have any concerns about your home heating system.
