Should I Dye Test My Toilet for Leaks?

It definitely won’t hurt! Dye testing your toilet for leaks is an incredibly simple and effective way in which to determine if your toilet has a leak between the tank and the bowl. That may not sound like that big of a deal, but it can lead to a lot of wasted water over the course of a single day, let alone year after year.

You may assume that the fact that you don’t have a pool of water surrounding your toilet means that you don’t have a leak. You’d be wrong in this assumption, however. You see, water can leak from the tank into the bowl, and that can cause your toilet to draw in more water than it should. Over time, you are looking at a lot of wasted money as the result of wasted water.

Why Dye the Water?

The notion of putting a dye tablet, or even squeezing some food coloring, into your water tank may sound a little odd. In reality, though, it provides you with valuable information. After adding the dye or coloring to the water in the tank, wait for 15 minutes or so before going back to check. When that amount of time has passed, simply lift the lid and check the color of the water in the bowl. If it is now dyed a different color, then you have a leak in the assembly between the tank and the toilet bowl.

We should note that this process is really only intended to help you to determine if this is actually a problem in your bathroom. You should still call in a trained professional to handle any toilet repairs in Chesapeake, VA.
