What Are the Pros and Cons of Tank and Tankless Water Heaters?

When you think of all that you use hot water for in your home on a daily basis, it becomes clear how vital it is that you have a great water heater installed. From doing to the laundry and running the dishwasher, to showering and general cleaning, you have a big demand for hot water in your house, and you want it delivered effectively, conveniently, and affordably. So make sure you choose your new water heater with care. Read on to learn about some of the pros and cons of both tank and tankless water heaters.

Tank vs. Tankless

Let’s start with the tank water heater, as this is the type of system that most homeowners are generally familiar with. Tank water heaters either combust fuel to generate heat to warm water, or use electric resistance coils to do so. The heated water is then stored in a storage tank, so that there is a reservoir of hot water ready when you need it. These systems are quite affordable to purchase, and are great for instances in which hot water is needed for multiple applications. However, efficient as today’s storage tanks are, there is still going to be some standby energy loss to consider, in which heat from the water transfers out through the tank and into the surrounding environment.

With tankless water heaters, you won’t have to worry about standby energy loss. They don’t store water at all, but instead heat only the water as it is needed. This makes them very efficient, and very compact, which is ideal for tight spaces. However, these systems are also much more expensive than tank models, and may be overwhelmed easier during times of heavy use. They do have longer lifespans, though, so the energy savings over time can really add up.
