What Is an Anode Rod, And What Does It Do?

There are a lot of appliances that we depend upon each and every day of our lives. But few play quite as major a role as our water heaters do. It is your water heater that provides you with the hot water that you need for washing dishes, doing the laundry, showering, and general cleaning.

Considering just how much you rely upon your water heater, it only makes sense that you should do everything possible in order to ensure that you get the very best performance that it has to offer. That is why it is so important that you keep a good anode rod in your hot water tank. This is a very important means of protection.

What Does an Anode Rod Do?

An anode rod is not a highly complex mechanical component in your water heater. It is literally just a metal rod. Typically, these rods are composed of aluminum or magnesium, with magnesium being preferred for its performance quality, though it is more expensive. The rod has only one purpose, and that is to attract the corrosive elements in the water within your hot water tank. In doing so, it sacrifices itself for the greater good of the system. This is why these rods are often called “sacrificial anodes.”

You likely know that steel will corrode when in contact with water and oxygen. That is why your water tank is lined with glass. Glass can and will crack, though, especially when constantly subjected to high heat levels. That is why having an anode rod in place is so important. The rod will degrade over time as it corrodes, so you should have it evaluated by a professional plumber to ensure that it is still able to perform its function successfully.
